CBS Big Brother Diet Cruelty

I am officially addicted to CBS' "Big Brother." I have watched the series pretty much since it debuted in 2000 and have become obsessed this summer. If anyone is unfamiliar with the show,Big Brother is a reality show in which a number of strangers live in an isolated studio-like house that is filled with cameras and compete to win a cash prize. Each week a houseguest is voted off. The last one standing, as voted by the last six house guests to be voted off, wins $500K.

I am writing about this on my Celebrities and Diet Blog because I am curious as to how healthy is can be living in the house. What food do the producers buy for the guests? More importantly, there is this thing called Slop. It looks like oatmeal, and almost every week there is a food competition. Guests play by themselves or they play in groups. Who ever loses has to "be on slop" for the week. An entire week of nothing but an Oatmeal-esque substance. How can this be healthy I am wondering? Some people are on slop for like thirty days!

How are they getting their leafy greens and protein? My thought is that the producers do this to create irrationality and irritability among the players on slop to cause more drama. I would think more people would cheat the system and eat whatever they wanted, but truth is, only one person in BB history has ever gone against the slop rule. This caused major tension and that player was then voted off that same week.

I found on the internet what is actually in the slop. The list of specific ingredients is very long and contains long, boring words, but it's based in oatmeal and contains many condiments (balsamic vinegar, parsley, rosemary, hot sauce, ketchup, mayo, mustard, pickles, salsa, relish, soy sauce, steak sauce, white sugar, tea, brown sugar, BBQ sauce, and several others. Sickening. Just plain sick if you ask me.

Here is the nutritional value: 290 calories per serving, 27g protein, 40 grams of carbs, 4g of fat, high in fiber.

The guests don't seem to be gaining weight this season, actually they look slimmer if you ask me. Past seasons used PB and J as food restriction. If anyone remembers June, I think she gained quite a few pounds while living in the house for the summer.

Could you eat this stuff for an entire week, let alone a month?

Gweneth Paltrow To Star in Own Cooking Show

Gweneth Paltrow is putting her Movie star career on the backburner for now. Her newest title to be added to her resume, is TV cooking show host. The macriobiotic Paltrow will be leaving behind her husband and daughter apple for two months to tour Spain with chef Mario Batali, cooking and sampling the local delicacies with cameras following her every move.

The show will debut on the American PBS channel in October.

Here is a clip of the article that announced Gweneth's new endeavor:

"The actress, 34, is a famously fussy eater and has been ridiculed in the past for her bizarre and strict diet regimes.

They have ranged from strictly macrobiotic to Atkins to vegetarian-who-eats-fish diets. She still doesn't eat pork or beef, but is willing to sample other delicacies for the show. Gwyneth claimed: "I eat all that [Spanish] stuff. The crazy fish things, the eels, I love it all." What about the Iberico ham and cold meats?

TV programme will pay homage to a country where Paltrow spent many childhood summers.

It will also give her a chance to offer America a look at Spanish cooking. Channel 4 and ITV are currently in a bidding war to win the rights to show the programme over here.

A source said: "This is so far removed from what Gwyneth is used to that the show is sure to be a ratings winner. It can't fail.

One wonders if there's a macrobiotic recipe for disaster...

"Even if it's proper car-crash TV it will be entertaining at least." -Daily Mail

What do you guys think? Will you turn in to see what Gwenie cooks up?

Jessica Alba uses the Nintendo Wii to Work out

So what is the latest report on how Jessica Alba stays fit? Apparently the tabloids now want us to believe that the hot bod actress uses Nintendo Wii to stay in shape. This seems more like a product endorsement than factual journalism to me. We all know what happened to 'Skinny Bitch' the book after Victoria Beckham was spotted with a copy in hand.

The latest rumor is that Jessica shuns diets and personal trainers in favor of a Nintendo Wii workout. I am pretty sure she eats healthy and definetly has a personal trainer, but whatevs... Unlike most computer and video games, the Wii offers an actual physical workout. For example, a boxing game is said to burn around 560 calories per hour. One of my guy friends purchased a Wii this summer. One late saturday night they decided to play the Wii version of tennis. A couple hours later, they were drenched in sweat and had the time of their life (mixed in with a few curse words and friendly competitive arguments.)

"I just got the Wii and that's fun," says Alba. "I play all of the Wii Sports games, like bowling, tennis, and baseball. That's a lot of fun."

Nintendo Wii will be coming out with a new game called Wii Fit that will be like having an electronic personal trainer. Sign me up! I want a Wii. I have never been very successful using video games but I feel like I would be fantastic at the Wii. I'm way to competitive. I had a Sega Genesis back in the day. However, someone told me the secret code of Aladdin to win the entire game, and basically that was the end of my sega career. I never could master the Playstation. Lara Croft (Tomb Raiders) would just run in circles and into walls, to just get eaten by a wolf because I could not figure out how to master the controller.

Here is what Wikipedia says about Wii Fit:

Wii Fit will use a unique platform peripheral called the Wii Balance Board that can measure a user's body mass index and their center of gravity. The game will have about 40 different activities, including yoga poses, press ups, and other exercises. Furthermore, Wii Fit will allow its players to compare their fitness by using Wii Fit's own channel on the Wii Menu.
In a similar manner to the "Brain Age" calculated within Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day!, Wii Fit will also track a user's "Wii Fitness Age".

The Wii Fit Board.

Here are the exercises that you will be able to do using the Wii as a workout:
Yoga exercises
Press ups
Step aerobics, including a game in which the player must step on and off the Wii Balance Board in rhythm to the background music[
Hitting on-coming soccer balls and avoiding other objects by leaning forward and back
A ball-rolling mini-game
Hula hooping
Ski jumping, whereby the player squats as low as possible, whilst maintaining his or her balance, and then quickly stands as fast as possible in order to gain a good jump.

Looks like Dance Dance Revolution has some new competition. Any one here have a Wii? I want one very bad... Hey Nintendo PR peeps if you're out there... if you send me one I'll make you a fun video of me looking ridiculous :)

Is Jenna Bush Pregnant or did she Gain Weight?

Have you heard the latest Bush gossip? As many of you know, I am an avid Perez Hilton fan. I do not like him because he is a media-whore, but I do like his blog. He reported that Nicole Richie was shopping in Washington D.C. Two of my best friends from college live in Georgetown so I called the two of them, to try and get their butts downtown to see her baby bump.

As I was looking for a DC blog, I stumbled upon Wonkette. It claims to be the place for DC dirt. When I was looking for the whereabouts of preggers Nicole, I saw a story that was claiming Jenna Bush was involved in a shot gun wedding. Wonkette is trying to say that Jenna is actually pregnant, and does not want to marry Henry “Hank” Hager “the Horrible” (this is what Wonkette calls him! haha).

Here is a snip-it of the blog entry:
"Tragically pregnant first twin Jenna Bush is being rushed into a marriage with former boyfriend and Karl Rove lackey Henry Hager..."

Another entry documents the recent pictures taken of the engaged couple, showing lack of smiling and affection. Then another entry dedicated to the most recent pictures of Jenna points out her growing body. Is she gaining weight or is the Presidents daughter actually pregnant? You guys decide... Here are the most recent pictures...
This one is from June 17th, 2007:

This one is the most recent photo taken of Jenna Bush dating back to August 12th, 2007. The one on the left is "supposedly" Jenna, but if she came out saying it wasn't her, I would believe it.

I don't like to criticize public figures, especially those who don't really ask for it, on their weight. Jenna is a totally normal girl, who I identify with in some respects (her college years primarily). If she is indeed pregnant, I feel really bad for her, because she obviously couldn't have an abortion and can't really have a child out of wedlock... This could be some big problems for George Jr. in regards to his family values. I hope she's just gained a few pounds, because she can always lose them, but a child with a man you don't want to be with for the rest of your life is kind of heart breaking.

Maria Sharapova Shares Her Workout

Finally, a celebrity workout I actually believe may be true! And when I say celebrity, I mean the highest paid female athlete, 20 year-old pro tennis player, Maria Sharapova. She may still have the advantage of a speedy metabolism and a job that requires exercise at least 6 days a week but still, there's no doubt this 6-foot-2 female looks healthy and fabulous.
Sharapova graces the cover of the September issue of Shape magazine. After reading the Q & A, you feel like it requires effort for her to not stay strong and skinny. Here are the main points that you could use:
-Playing tennis everyday can become boring. Maria switches up her exercise whenever she can like doing Yoga or going for a bike ride. Her new love is salsa dancing.
-She does not diet. She eats three big meals a day, always making sure to have a balance of both carbs and protein. She snacks on fruit along with a slice of ham or some other lean protein. She never denies herself a sweet if she wants it.

-To get her grand slammin body, her trainer recommends a workout that requires a a resistance tube, a stability ball, and an 8 pound weight ball.

I will not attempt to give you her workout, however the only reason I am doing this is mainly because it is kind of unique in the sense that he recommends more sets and reps than most fitness routines you find in these magazines or for any celebrity workout which is why I am claiming, this might actually be a real workout Sharapova does. It's very interesting to me. I'm used to 2-3 sets, with 10-12 reps. Here he pushes that notion. Anyone have any idea of the benefits or upping sets and reps with out using weights?

Start with a warm up for 12 minutes with some easy cardio. Then the mag gives details for 5 different moves. The first is a Overhead triceps extension with a resistance band (3-5 sets of 10 to 16 reps). The next is a Pike on the ball, which looks like a plank on a ball with a hip lift as you roll the ball towards you chest, like a hinge (6-12 reps, 3-5 sets). Then there's a medicine ball shuffle, which is basically holding the medicine ball to your left side, throwing it to a partner, shuffling to your right, and catching the ball (thrown from the partner) on your ride side so you are twisting and workout your core (3-5 sets of 9 to 15 reps). Second to last we have a tuck and crunch which is a Pilates bridge (knees bent, feet on floor now lift hips), lower booty, put right leg straight up in the air while left knee is still bend with foot on the floor, put your hands behind your head curl up and crunch to your right knee. Lower leg and repeat with left leg straight up. That was one rep. Do 3-5 sets of 12-18 reps. Lastly, is the front cross squat. This move sounds more like a lunge to me. Start in squat position, step right foot out -6 inches to the right, then cross left leg behind and do a lunge. Step left foot out and cross right behind and lunge again for one rep. So 3-5 sets of 12-18 reps.

There you have it. If you can do it by my descriptions you're a pro! If not check out the magazine. :) Until Friday, stay fit!

Ugly Betty slims down, Posh Spice bulks up

I can't believe summer is winding down. I might be the most depressed person on the planet. However, the end of summer does mean new episodes of all my favorite TV shows. I am a self proclaimed TV junkie. It's not like I sit in front of my TV for hours upon end, but I do have an obsession with my DVR, and now I've got Comcast On Demand. It's all going down here. New TV, plus cold weather, minus some major sunlight hours and I've got myself quite in the lazy rut.

One of my favorite shows that debuted last year is Ugly Betty. If you watch the show, there is this lingering question, "When is Betty going to get the Anne Hathaway Makeover like in The Devil Wear Prada?" Basically they can't do it, but as some one who went to college without any sense of fashion, you kinda learn/like/follow how everyone around you dresses. Not that I'm a follower, but I didn't own a single pair of designer jeans going to school, and now I could fill up an entire suitcase and not have enough room. In the real world, I would think Betty would adapt and begin to like the designer duds she can score for free, and she can't have braces forever right?

Anyway, here is a recent picture of America Ferrara still looking curvy but much slimmer. She reportedly loves food and works out to keep healthy and strong, I don't think she will ever look like an Olsen twin but what are they going to do about this on the show? Make her wear baggier clothing?

Interesting enough, rumors are circulating around the show biz that Posh Spice will be making a guest appearance on Ugly Betty this season. However, she will be wearing a FAT suit. Yes, you read that correct. The rumor is that she is expected to show up at a wedding but when she arrives the guests are shocked at the pounds she has gained since moving to America due to a food binge since moving to the United States. o, finally, we Brits (and you Yanks) know who the ‘loathed and false’ Victoria Beckham is playing in hit US comedy, Ugly Betty.

"According to reports, the super-thin size zero Spice Girls is playing a fat version of herself, who since arriving in America, has binged on treats. She will shock viewers as she appears in the on-screen wedding in a fat suit.
The singer, who thinks this is going to “really funny”, is apparently cracking America and is “really major”, according to herself. She’s living a lie!
An insider at the ABC network said: “Everybody at the wedding will be expecting skinny beautiful Posh to show up.
“But they’ll be horrified to see she’s piled on the pounds because of major comfort eating and American junk food.”

I don't see the humor in this at all. If anything, it's poking fun on American society and the Obesity epidemic with a British anorexic* woman. (*Maybe not totally anorexic, but come on, she's pretty honest about not eating... Seriously, she admits she doesn't eat, she just doesn't seem to think it's a problem).

I like Ugly Betty for pushing the envelope in regards to immigration laws, and the exceptionally high standards in the fashion industry, but to say that foreigners who move to America are going to automatically get fat, is a little ridiculous. How is Posh going to be funny anyway? She doesn't even smile, let alone be able to laugh at herself...

Diet Pill Advertising Deception, Before and After Photos

If you've ever bought a diet pill, most likely you were first attracted by the before and after pictures plastered all over the ads. If you look closesly at the bottom of the page, there is a message in fine print. It says that results are not typical and that these results were achieved by strict diet and exercise routines. This fine print statement completely contradicts diet pill company claims of no diet or exercise needed to lose weight. It is sneaky but perfectly legal because the fine print is there no matter how well hidden.
This probably comes of no suprise to many of you. On Wednesday, I was in Martha's VIneyard for a shoot with Diet.com video. I got to meet the Men's Fashion Director of Playboy (who is hilarious, and extremely sincere) and one of the best women's stylists in the industry for photo shoots. While we were chatting over a diet friendly home made meal, the women's stylist made a comment how they take the pictures for the ads the same day, sometimes!

I was in shock. Obviously I already had my hesitations because the before is always a slouched pose, unflattering clothing, no makeup or a smile. The after is always, great hair/makeup, super smiley, super tan and perfect posture. But I couldn't believe that they actually have the nerve to take the photo's the same day!

When I got back, I tried to look for any articles regarding these so called before and after pictures. The only dirt I could dig up was in fact calling them out on the people that are chosen. Of course they aren't Sally Jane who teaches second grade in Oklahoma, but rather body builders during their off season. Apparently these fitness models are even paid to gain weight just to lose it.

Celebrities that claim they lose weight in the tabloids with specific diet, I also think are a bunch of BS. Jessica Simpson for example, I am convinced was paid to endorse the four factor diet. If you look at any of the before and after pictures, she is clearly wearing unflattering pants (high wasted yuckies) with sour puss on her face, then in a cute little outfit, smiling and waving. Valerie Bertinelli has been recently rumored to not be losing any more weight on the Jenny Craig Diet, but WAS recently featured on the cover of People Magazine with Kirstie Alley, looking fabulous. Photoshop anyone? What do you guys think? Deception is an easy persuader to get people to buy your product. Should there be a disclaimer on ads for diet pills that say, "This pill has not been proven to be

Daisy Fuentes Bikini Photo shoot Workout Plan

What TV personality recently gave praise to the multicultural celebration of body image that is apparently currently going on? Why former model, MTV VJ, and now pilates spokeswoman Daisy Fuentes. First off, she looks great! Positively stunning.

Posing for the cover of the September issue of Fitness, Fuentes chats about body confidence and how the female hispanic community has evolved it's body image over the past five years. "I'm happy that we're all starting to see how beauty shines through no matter what you look like," She tell the mag.
She also dishes out on how she prepared for her bikini photo shoot.

Four weeks before the shoot:
45-minute hikes in the Hollywood Hills twice a week
Pilates for 1 hour, 3 times a week.
Circuit training session, 3 times a week.

Two weeks before the shoot:
Added an extra hike, and one or two games of tennis a week.
Stepped up her Pilates sessions by using a stability ball for ab work and 5 pound weights.
Upped the squats, lunges and push ups, and added 8-10 pound weights for some bicup curls.

One week before:
Daisy played an extra game of tennis and hiked more hills. She added tae kwon doe kicks to the circuit to tone and tighten.

Ok, is it just me, or does this seem exhausting??? Fuentes admits that she eats pretty healthy and doesn't count calories or obsess over them. What she doesn't say is that she didn't obsess about exercising.

LA's New Hot Spot: The Farmer's Market

Did you know that you can save money on fresh healthy produce and catch a random spotting of A-list celebrities? If you've planned a trip to Los Angeles recently, most of you (if you are like me) want to see at least ONE celebrity, right? Want to know where to catch these celebs during the day light without getting beat up like a paparazzi?

We see celebrities eating at glam restaurants like The Ivy on Robertson (which is where all the good shopping/paparazzi pics take place. But the rich and famous can't keep a slim figure by eating out every meal, right? To load up on healthy fresh produce, the celebs flock to farmers markets. Great prices, fresh delicious fruits and veggies, who wouldn't take advantage of these great deals? Jennifer Garner, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Marcia Cross, Naomi Watts and Adam Sandler have all been hitting LA's newest hot spot. I am pretty sure the one they all go to is at the corner of Fairfax and Third but there are also ones in Brentwood, Westwood and probably many other locations. Let me know if I'm wrong.

You can catch a new video of how to shop at a Farmers Market with Diet.com's newest featured weight loss challenger coming up so make sure to keep your eye out.

I have been to LA probably ten times. I even lived there for a month with my brother. I don't think I saw a single celebrity unexpectedly. I interned on the Warner Bros. lot so I saw my fair share there, but only this past February did I see T.R. Knight shopping while I was eating lunch at a restaurant that was chosen because I saw LC and Brody Jenner out on a date at the same restaurant/clothing/antique store during an episode of The Hills.

Also, despite looking like a skeleton, Courtney Love tells People Magazine that she has actually gained 10 pounds thanks to cupcakes! On her MySpace blog she wrote, ""ive put on 10 pounds (thank you Sprinkles cupcakes wic h i must admit are overrated)." The singer took a jab at herself during a recent concert by taking a sip of a protein shake saying, "I need to take care of my eating disorder," to then proceed to say, she did not have an eating disorder. Whatever... That body of hers has been to hell and back. In April, Love claimed to have shed 52 lbs. thanks to a diet of Isopure shakes, fish and vegetables.

Last but not least, Gwen Stefani admits to being neurotic about her weight. This is news? I thought we've always known this...

Victoria Beckham Sends Diet Book To Bestsellers

Ok so, chances are you have no interest in being on whatever diet Victoria Beckham is on, right? The Brittish import has taken LA by storm, and drawing in all the media attention she can get. Obviously she is followed by photographers every minute. Why not share the wealth by being spotted with a book? Yes, Posh Spice was seen recently holding a "diet" book. She's like totally the new Oprah! Since when does this girl need diet advice?
Anyway, Posh was spotted with the book "Skinny Bitch" back in May. I heard about this book back in November 2006. I took a look at it and was intrigued but I never took the next step to actually purchase it or read it. When the photo's hit the web the book jumped from 77,939th place on the Amazon website sales chart to 209th - a whopping increase of 37,000%. Today, it is currently sitting pretty at the number 7 spot on Amazon's top sellers!

This is incredible PR, and one of the smartest moves (if planned) by the author's publicist. However, don't get too excited yet. The book is written by a former model, who has a degree in holistic nutrition and a former modeling agent.

The book boasts a "no-nonsense, tough-love guide for savvy girls who want to stop eating crap and start looking fabulous." Before the rail thin Becks bought the book, it had failed to garner much attention.

So what's this book about you ask? First, it's not for the light hearted with quotes like,"you are a total moron if you think the Atkins Diet will make you thin", and "soda is liquid Satan."
"Based on a vegan philosophy, the Skinny Bitch guide encourages women to eat whole grains, fruits and vegetables while urging them to abandon dairy products, eggs, meat and fish. The authors also issue a scathing attack on meat eaters, calling those who choose to eat meat while attempting to lose weight 'morons'."

Here is a snip-it from a UK newpaper .
Exactly what the already excessively thin Posh - who has long battled rumours of anorexia - expects to glean from the Skinny Bitch book has once again lifted the lid on the debate about celebrity weight loss.

Posh, who according to one newspaper has a 23in waist size - the equivalent of a seven year-old girl - has admitted in the past to suffering from an eating disorder. The 33-year-old mother of three - who wears a UK size 4 and US size 0 - said that she first began to lose weight at the height of the Spice Girls phenomenon in the mid-1990s.

"I became obsessed with what I looked like," she revealed in the April edition of Heat magazine. "I would look in the mirror and check the size of my bottom, see if my double chin was getting smaller.

"I began living on vegetables and nothing else, but it never occurred to me I had an eating disorder, because I was the same size I had always been. I thought I was just getting into shape."

A diagnosis of polycystic ovaries caused her to change her eating habits, but the star admitted that by then the 'damage was done', and that it was hard to resume eating normal food.

Despite published reports of her bizarre eating habits - chewing food excessively, declining portions that can't fit into the palm of her hand (the same size as her stomach), only eating fruit until 3pm and then limiting her caloric intake to 500 for the remainder of the day - Posh claims she no longer has an eating disorder.

"I do control my eating. But I think there is a big difference between someone having an eating disorder and someone who is controlled about what they eat," she told Heat. She admits, though, that she is anxious about her looks. "I know I'm not naturally beautiful or a supermodel," she said. "I'm very insecure about the way I look."

What do you guys think? I'm on the brink of becoming a vegetarian (sorta) so I don't really want to read the book because I'm afraid I will and I don't think my guy friends would be very welcoming of my newly adopted eating habits. I already get yelled at for buying whole wheat buns and turkey burgers. Is anyone here a vegan or read the book?

Celeb Weight Gain Watch

It's statistically proven that those who succeed at losing weight will most likely gain it back. Bummer, I know. This rule of thumb didn't seem to apply to celebrities. Once they become ultra skinny, the make it seem like they need to try even harder to gain weight back. Uhhhhh, sure Nicole Richie, keep telling yourself that...

However, instead of a celebrity skinny anorexia watch, I feel like lately the paparrazzi has been on a "Who gained what where watch." Just recently, I featured a picture of Janet Jackson who seemed to gain most of the weight she had lost back. I say give the girl a break, who cares. Obviously she was on a diet, and never adopted a healthy lifestyle, as we here at Diet.com try to infiltrate.

Laguna Beach alum Kristin Cavalleri seen here on the beach this past week in a bikini shows off her little beer belly. I genuinely like Kristin for this picture. She isn't trying to be too strict with herself. She clearly eats and liked to go out, and is enjoying her 15 minutes, why waste it as a miserable person who lives at a gym and counts every carrot. She has a good body but she has gained a few in the belly since the last time we saw her in a bathing suit. Maybe she just got caught without her signature move, sucking it in!

Another celebrity known for her weight ups and downs is Beyonce. This recent photo looks like B. is embracing her curves once again. The famous detox/liquid juice faster praised the results of her Dream Girls diet, but admitted it was not something she could maintain. Ya think? This picture should be side by side with every endorsement for that ridiculous diet. "Lose Weight for a Month, gain back double in a year."

Here's another favorite of mine, Scarlett Johansson. This picture also looks like she has gained a few.

Jamie Pressly Loses Baby Weight, Celebrities Indulging

In just two months after giving birth to her son Dezi, Jamie Pressly has managed to get back her pre-pregnancy body in typical celebrity fashion. Here is a recent photo of the My Name is Earl star celebrating her 30th birthday with fiance Eric Cubiche with an '80s glam rock-themed party in Vegas on Friday at PURE nightclub's Pussycat Dolls Lounge.

Keep an eye on the tabloids in the coming weeks for how she got her body back. My guess is that she will say protein and veggies plus lots of exercise with a personal trainer who kicked her butt. That is what professional baby maker Heidi Klum does, and you can't disagree with her recipe.

Speaking of celebrity diets and workouts, as you all know I think they fabricate what they eat, and underestimate how much they workout. However, I do enjoy seeing pictures of celebrities eat, especially indulging in foods they actually love. I think it's... A) refreshing to see them eat real food and B) it is healthy to satisfy your cravings once in awhile. Here are some recent fun posts of celebrities eating badly.

Here is Jennifer Garner enjoying a fresh strawberry at the Brentwood farmers market. She admits she is a healthy eater and crazy exerciser.

Here is resident crazy, Paula Abdul enjoying some ice cream.

And lastly, here is Hilary Duff pickin up some late night munchies from the candy department. Good to see a skinny girl who recently lost weight, can still let herself indulge.
