How I lost 25% of my body fat!

Looking to lose weight fast or lose weight the healthy way? How about both! Find out how I recently lost fat and toned up with the help of a personal trainer.

You guys ask me for advice a lot and I don't really have the credentials to give it out, but here is a look at what I do and have done to lose weight this holiday season. Gossip Cop says Madonna bicep picture not real

New media watch dog web site, Gossip Cop, says that the recent picture taken of Madonna's super skinny and toned biceps has been retouched.

The Mirror published the photo with the headline, “Madonna’s muscly arms – a walking biology lesson.”

Madonna's rep, however, told Gossip Cop, “Madonna’s arms in the most recent photos have absolutely been altered by Photoshop or some other means. Her arms do not look like that in real life.”

A rep for the photographer never returned Gossip Cop's call.

Madonna has long had arms that were noticeably toned and somewhat manly. She is an avid yoga fan, and never misses a workout. Some of the grimy details about her workout ethics came out during her divorce to guy Ritchie.

A close friend of the couple told a UK website: "He got more and more frustrated as she spent nearly half the day working out. Afterwards she'd be too tired to make love."

With recent issues, we don't agree with Gossip Cop and think these photo's of Madonna's guns are for reals.

Gossip Cop says that they are going to force the tabloid to be more responsible in their reporting. Although they rate this story a 4 on a scale of 1-10, 1 being fake and 10 being true, they at least admit the story may be true.

Scarlett Johansson Shapes Up For Movie Role!

So just how did Scarlett Johansson shape up for her upcoming role in Iron Man 2? "I kicked some major butt," the actress, 24, told PEOPLE magazine at Comic-Con of her workout routine to make her a fit superhero ready for acrobatic battle scenes. "It was many, many, hours, days, and months of stunt training and strength training, but it's fun because I had a goal. The goal was the Lycra catsuit."

Was she happy with the results? "Finally I was, yes," she said with a laugh. "You put that much work into something and you put it on and you better be happy with it."

When it came to putting on the catsuit, "It was crazy to see it for the first time – everything all zipped up and all the weapons in there, bracelets on, the whole look. It was pretty sweet, I have to say," she says.

As for the impression it made, "Certainly walking on set, because a lot of the people that worked on the film were fans of the comic and of course they knew the Black Widow – they were all super excited to see the Black Widow," she says. "When everybody in the crew were like, 'That looks awesome!' I knew. Like, 'Okay.' "

"She was wearing an unforgiving costume," agreed Johansson's Iron Man 2 director Jon Favreau. "She didn't eat much, that's for sure. She likes food, as do I, and she was definitely on a low-carb diet and training very hard. It was amazing."

I think it's safe to say when the role is over, Scarlett will begin to enjoy food again. She is known for having womanly curves and she's not afraid to labeled as one of the more shapely actresses in La-La land. Although Iron Man 2 doesn't open until May 10, 2010, you can see Scarlett's hot body in most tabloid magazines.

Star Trek's Rachel Nichols' Ab Workout

I'm not much of a "Trekkie" but for some reason I am very excited to go see Star Trek. I think it looks like a pretty cool movie to go see in a theater. There is one character in particular I am interested in. The green alien who prances around in her underwear.

The actress is Rachel Nichols and her trainer just so happens to be my friend and celebrity trainer Valerie Waters. New to the big blockbuster scene, Nichols may be recognized by teens from The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 movie. Well she grows up a bit in this movie and gets to be painted green! It took apparently 2 hours to get ready and then once she was ready she only got to wear her undies and then had to a love scene. How nerve wracking for your first large role!?

Anyway, she has a killer body and I was lucky enough to have Valerie Waters show me the move that Rachel felt really helped her abs get in tip top shape for the role. It's called the "Painful Push Away."

In order to do it, yes you need the Valslides which I think are totally worth it if you've give up your gym membership for the warm months but you can use paper plates on hard wood floors or something like that.
Start in plank position, or pushup position with your hands on top of the Val Slides. Slide your hands forward away from your shoulders and when you reach that point where your back sorta starts hurt, inch your feet forward a few inches until your hands are back underneath your shoulders. Repeat 10-15 times, rest, repeat 2x.

Scarlett Johansson slams tabloids on celebrity diet and fitness reports

When the weather gets warm, celebrity magazines start using more diet headlines to grab potential readers' attention. It's a tactic that is used without fail each bikini season. However, I have always been reluctant to believe what these magazines report. Scarlett Johannsen finally spoke up this week, proving my intuition was right.

Johannsen wrote a peice for the Huffington Post this week titled, "The Skinny," refuting claims that she has taken up some sort of extreme diet and exercise routine to get into "superhero shape."

Claims have been made that I've been on a strict workout routine regulated by co-stars, whipped into shape by trainers I've never met, eating sprouted grains I can't pronounce and ultimately losing 14 pounds off my 5'3" frame. Losing 14 pounds out of necessity in order to live a healthier life is a huge victory. I'm a petite person to begin with, so the idea of my losing this amount of weight is utter lunacy. If I were to lose 14 pounds, I'd have to part with both arms. And a foot.

She goes on to say that she is "frustrated with the irresponsibility of the tabloid media" and that it's "reckless and dangerous" for publications to sell stories telling of crash diets or miracle workout that are completely fabricated. Scarlett has always been and advocate for healthy body image and this article is very well written and totally worth reading to your daughter or sharing with friends.

I asked celebrity trainer Valerie Water (who has trained Jennifer Garner and Jessica Biel) whether or not tabloid stories are ever truthful when talking about a celebrity weight loss or fitness program. She said that usually when there is a magazine spread, the entire workout cannot be included as the result of page space.

For a real account of what it takes to look like Scarlet Johannsen from the horses mouth she says that when she is working, her workout and diet regimens are very different. Something that we don't notice because when she's not in films, we only see her pictures in magazines where they usually use photoshop.

Once filming is completed, I'll no longer need to rehash the 50 ways to lift a dumbbell, but I'll commit to working out at least 30 minutes a day and eating a balanced diet of fruit, vegetables and lean proteins.

I was relieved that her workout and diet seemed normal and attainable for normal people.

Eating healthy and getting fit is about commitment, determination, consistency and the dedication to self-preservation. While I've never been considered a gym rat, I have, in fact, worked up a sweat in the name of cardio before, and although I enjoy a grilled cheese as much as the next person, I combine the not-so-good foods I crave with an all-around balanced diet.

And before you go on to say, "If I had a personal trainer, I'd look that good too," Scarlet has one last bit of advice for you:

Pull ups, crunches, lunges, squats, jumping jacks, planks, walking, jogging and push ups are all exercises that can be performed without fancy trainers or gym memberships. I've realized through this process that no matter how busy my life may be, I feel better when I take a little time to focus on staying active.

Accountability is a proven weight loss motivational factor. When you sign up, you commit yourself and money. Most races cost between $15-$50 dollars. Many will ask you to raise money for a charity. Now you have an entire organization and anyone who donates to your total relying on your ability to finish a mini race. When you get home from a long day at work, going for a run may not be your first choice of activities to partake in but the gut wrenching feeling of crawling over the finishing line because you didn't train adequately is enough to put on your sneakers and get in some calorie burning cardio.

Give Back While Doing Your Body Good

Have you been longing for something more? When I graduated college, I no longer had to put in community service time with my sorority and dropped off the bandwagon of giving back to my community. It seemed like all I did was go to work, go to the gym, eat, drink and sleep. It's a mindless circle many recent recent grads fall into. Signing up for a race will allow you to meet new people, help out a good cause, and improve your own overall health. If you're looking to lose weight, it's a great way to mix up your routine.

I am an Aries and love competition. I miss the rush from High School sports. Even in college, my sorority would compete in dance shows, kickball, powder puff, etc. I love the feeling of being a part of a team or even better, winning. Most of us probably will never win the races we enter, but accomplishment is so much more rewarding in the long run.
You also get fun gifts like T-Shirts, water bottles and ribbons. Did I say fun gifts? I meant clutter... Kidding, it's a workout shirt to wear to the gym and intimidate the person on the treadmill next to you.
Also, many organizations plan BBQ's, picnics, and beer festivals for after the races. Surprisingly many beer companies like Harpoon and Michelob Ultra actually sponsor the 5K's and the parties afterward.

Valerie Bertinelli shows off her bikini body on the cover of People Magazine

Most of probably remember Valerie Bertinelli as a washed up soap star, but now she's showing off her bikini body on the cover of People Magazine for her 49th birthday! 

The editor for People magazine was on The Today Show this morning showing off the bikini clad cover.  She said, "Bertinelli admits though that it's hard work and she feels like she's just a jalapeno popper from being 40 lbs overweight again."

Valerie Bertinelli, best known for her 1975-84 sitcom One Day at a Time, was named the new face for Jenny Craig in 2007.  Measuring in at 5'2" and size 14, Bertinelli at the time she was named was about to turn age 47.  She initially pledged to lose 30 lbs. by September 2007, but has since lost 40!  She said that going public with her goal was the motivation she needed.   "I need to do this in front of millions of people so I can't mess up."

After reaching her initial goal, Valerie stuck with the program and said she wanted to get back her bikini body by her 49th birthday.  She achieved her goal and this week you can get a glimpse of her vamped up exercise routine to get there.  When it comes out on stands, I'll post her workout here for you all to check out!  

But until then, here is what I've got: Valerie has been working out 5 days a week for at least an hour for the last 3 months.  She mixes things up with cardio and weight training exercises.  She said, taking it off in front of the camera was a fear she wanted to overcome

I think Valerie is an excellent role model for women who think that it's not possible to ever get back that body they once had back in their twenties or thirties.  Clearly, she has proven that you are never too old to wear a bikini as long as you have confidence.  Accountability is also a great motivational factor that you can steal from Valerie.  She will also appear on Oprah April 1st.

If you are inspired by Valerie's accomplishments, here is a beginners fat burning move that will help you get started and figure out where you are at, fitness level wise.  This is one of the most dreaded moves a trainer can throw at you, but with the beginner version, you'll be ready to face the challenge in no time.

Kelly Clarkson: Fat, Pregnant, or Normal?

Kelly Clarkson performed her newest single last night on American Idol and this morning rumors are swirling that she is pregnant.  Haven't we been down this path before?  She is not pregnant, and she's not fat.  She's just a little bigger boned and I think it's great!  She is an excellent role model for young girls. 

Kelly Clarkson has always had a bit of bigger build than typical Hollywood starlets.  She recently told Extra or Access Hollywood (I can't remember) that she's always been about the same size.  When reports or pictures surface that she has gained weight, Clarkson says it depends on the outfit she's wearing and camera angle.

Sound familiar?  Not too long ago, Jessica Simpson has a similar mishap with a pair of "mom jeans" at a chili fest.  Not even a week later, it looked as if the weight had fallen off.

I feel that the main reason when people see Kelly in concert photos or performing live on TV like last night and they think she has gained weight, it's because they are so used to seeing her in magazines where she is always photoshopped to look much thinner than she actually is!  For example, she appeared grossly retouched in this Glamour cover from 2007.

She's not pregnant people, she's just naturally curvier!  She was quoted on Extra (or Access Hollywood) saying, "I don't know who this girl is, but damn does she look good," when looking at her own magazine spread.  

The two most famous idols are arguably Kelly and Carrie Underwood.  Both lost a significant amount of weight after they won their titles.  Us weekly covered their weight loss back in December of 2006.  So what does Kelly Clarkson do to keep in shape?  Last I heard, Clarkson was an avid runner. She reportedly used to run for like an hour every morning! That is until she began touring and no longer had the time. During the summer of 2006 Kelly landed a deal with Vitamin Water (weird because Underwood is the new spokeswoman).  Clarkson did gain some weight but then Vitamin water reportedly requested she lose the weight before representing their sugar loaded "health" product.  She lost that weight cutting out sugary drinks cold turkey. Sounds like she just stopped drinking her sponsor. 

I wonder if my body "idol" Carrie Underwood will gain a few pounds now that she's representing Vitamin Water? Hmmmm... What do you think about Clarkson?  Does she gain weight or do you believe her when she says it depends on what she is wearing?

Did Jessica Simpson get fat again!?

A favorite pastime of mine is looking at Google Trends.  It tells you what are the top 100 searched terms during the hour.  Usually it consists of non celebrities in the news, stories seen on The Today Show or random things like Nuyorican because MTV was airing True Life: I'm a Nuyorican during that hour.  Today, "Jessica Simpson Fat" is a hot trend.  

I wanted to know why so after doing a little bit of research I found some pictures from a concert the blonde pop tart sang at this weekend.  Simpson appeared at the “99.9 KISS Country Chili Cookoff” yesterday at CB Smith Park on Flamingo Road in Pembroke Pines, Florida. 

First and foremost, her outfit was horrendous.  I don't care if she gains weight or loses weight, but doesn't she have people giving her advice on what to wear?  I mean, if she did gain a little bit of weight, high waisted pants should be the last item of clothing she should have chosen to wear.  She may have gained 10 lbs over the Holidays, after all she does live in Texas, but the clothing added another 10. 

Here is my prediction for the year 2009 in the life of Jessica Simpson. 

  • Gain weight until photographed and blogged about. 

  • Find a diet company willing to pay for an endorsement. 

  • Exercise with personal trainer 5 days a week. 

  • Eat healthy. 

  • Lose weight. 

  • Call People magazine to tell them about the diet that helped changed my life.

  • Use recent publicity to plug album and make more money.

Also, does anyone remember Tyler from MTV's Real World Key West?  Well as it turns out he is a Pilates and Dance instructor right in Somerville.  I had the chance to catch up with him and get some leg slimming ballet moves that you can do in the kitchen or while pumping gas.  It's a nice break from typical squats and lunges that you can almost anywhere!  Check back for a link to the video when it becomes live or just go over to YouTube and subscribe to my channel!

I have just found the most disgusting weight loss advice web site. It claims to have the top secret fat loss secret. I hope it's not true but they have almost made me a believer.

Did Oprah lose the weight before Obama's inauguraion?

Five weeks ago, Oprah promised to lose 15 pounds by President Barack Obama's inauguration.  Did she do it?   She asked trainer Bob Greene to whip her into shape in just a week!  Possible on The Biggest Loser but in real life was this fete achieved?

Her trainer, Bob Greene, told OK! magazine: “Oprah knows the rules.  I have five weeks. She’ll be aggressive and lose the weight in a healthy way… She needs an hour of cardiovascular exercise six days a week. Crunches are done every day. That’s the core exercise.”  He’s also planning to throw in 15-20 minutes of strength training on three to four days a week.

According to, 38.3 percent of readers thought Oprah would be able to lose the weight.  Another 30 percent said they believed she would not.  So, now that the day is over, what do you think?  How do you feel she looked?

My only issue with Oprah Winfrey and weight is that she's an immediate icon, saleswoman for every book she reads, program she tries however even when the diets fail people still follow their leader Oprah.  Would you follow Richard Simmons if he still weighed 300 lbs?  Everyone is convinced that she knows all the answers. Well folks, I'm sorry to say it but she doesn't hold the weight loss answer.  She is a true testament that you can know all the facts yet lack the will power and energy to see them through.  

My trainer, Stephen Cabral and I decided to modify what Oprah said she was doing for a workout in the January edition of O Magazine.  You know, the one she talks about being over 200 lb!  Here is our workout video that we think is better than Oprah's and we also think she should take our advice into account!

Boost Energy Workout!

Although the days are getting longer, it seems I've been getting more lethargic by the day.

I'm trying to save money by skipping my daily Dunkin' Donuts cup of joe but I need another way to kick my butt into focus mode. I asked body transformation expert Stephen Cabral to help me find a way to boost my energy levels without tapping into my wallet.

Caffeine can give you a boost but can also lead to crash so these two exercises are great to get your mind and body moving. You're going to wake up your entire body.
Do these exercises until you are fatigued but not to failure.

Exercise 1: T-Twist Pushups: Get in plank position on forearms. Lift right arm up and twist hips open towards the right. Feet should be about a foot apart and fall like dominoes. Hold for a full breath count, and return to your forearms.

Lateral Raises: Standing shoulder distance apart, lunge out with your right foot to the right, keeping the left leg straight. Bend down and come right back up pushing off the right leg. Make sure to really push through your butt to get the glutes going.

Can Exercise Cure a Hangover?

Should you workout when you're hungover? Some people feel the need to workout every day, but if you're hungover it may make you feel worse than you already do! However there are some exercise moves that can make you feel better. Of course we are not recommending to go out and get wasted, but if you have one too many drinks, this is a good after the fact remedy.

The Night Before

If you're reading this prior to your night out, drink lots of water and start off the night with some food. Also take 50 mg of B6 vitamin before you start drinking. Take another 50 mg before bed with some Smart Water. Don't take any acetaminophen's, as they can damage your liver when mixed with alcohol. Also remember that clear liquor is best when trying to avoid that morning headache.

The Morning After

So you wake up and feel like death? First, take a look at what type of shape you are in. How much did you have to drink the night before? How bad do you really feel?

If you must squeeze in a workout keep the intensity level lower than usual. Don't do high intensity or interval training.

You're probably dehydrated so you should drink electrolyte filled water to help rehydrate your body. Gatorade is loaded with sugar so try a calorie free version or skip the artificial sweeteners all together and grab a smart water or other non flavored electrolyte water beverage. Check out some great tasting drinks in this taste test video here where the employees tried a variety of calorie free fitness drinks.

Stay away from bent over exercises where your head goes below your knees, like a downward dog or bent over row. You should also refrain from heavy lifting squats as well.

Stick to body weight exercises, or light calisthenics like jumping jacks. Get your blood flowing with something like high knees or if you can get to the gym walk on a low incline on the treadmill to get your blood flowing and start feeling better.

Bottom line, don't drink if you need to get in that hard core training or are trying to lose weight.

Do you need to detox? Yoga Move For Detox

Many celebrities are fans of detox diets like Gweneth Paltrow. She recently told that "I like to do fasts and detoxes a couple of times during the year, the most hardcore one being the Master Cleanse I did last spring. It was not what you would characterize as pretty. Or easy."

If you resolved to lose weight this year, welcome to the first day of the rest of your life. If you are going to succeed you must commit to a program that is sustainable for the rest of your life. Does a detox diet sound plausible? No but they are safe to do once in awhile. Although they are not medically necessary (doctors claim your body can do this on it's own), many people still love to do it and swear by it's energy boosting effects.

Paltrow admits, “As I do not wish to subsist on lemon water in the middle of winter, I asked my doctor, a detox diet specialist, for the guidelines he uses to achieve a good detox that is not as hallucinogenic (in a bad way) as the Master Cleanse. What it came down to was this: you can detox easily and effectively while you continue to eat as long as you are cutting out the foods and other substances that interfere with the detoxification process."

If you can learn to live a healthy lifestyle the rest should all just fall into place.

Eating well and exercising will come naturally but it can be difficult to get to this point of euphoria. Detoxing can help. I'm not talking about the master cleanse diet, or even the eat clean diet, but rather simple detoxifying yoga moves.

A few simple yoga moves can really open up your body and prepare itself for a body overhaul. Get rid of the toxins and unhealthy chemicals you've been feeding yourself all these years and start fresh. This video demonstrates a simple move that will help jump start your new years resolution to get back into shape and start living life to the fullest.

But just who needs to detox? Do you need to detox with diet or do you need to detox with yoga and other forms of exercise?

FYI: Gweneth cuts out dairy, grains with gluten, meat, shellfish, anything processed (including all soy products), fatty nuts, nightshades (potatoes, tomatoes, peppers and eggplant), condiments, sugar and obviously no alcohol, caffeine or soda. She does however eat salads, fruit smoothies, chicken, soups and lots of water.
